Indiana State Police Superintendent Doug Carter will step down Jan. 13, the day of Gov.-elect Mike Braun’s inauguration. Former Gov. Mike Pence appointed Carter in 2013, making him the department’s longest serving chief. He told media in 2022 that he planned to leave office with Holcomb. The son of a state trooper, Carter has spent 40 years in law enforcement since joining the ISP in 1984. Aside from an eight-year stint as sheriff of Hamilton County, he served the department his entire career.

The American Civil Liberties Union of Indiana is suing Purdue over a state law passed this year that many academics say dismantles tenure. Thought the suit is directed at the Purdue Board of Trustees, ACLU attorney Stevie Pactor hopes its constitutional challenge will stay the law itself. “Every statute like this that requires a state actor to take some action has a specific enforcement mechanism,” Pactor explained.

A new Indiana law allows universities to revoke a professor’s tenure if they don’t promote so-called “intellectual diversity” in the classroom. Supporters of the measure say it will make universities more accepting of conservative students and academics.
