Game 82 of the season wasn’t an entirely meaningless exercise for the Islanders. The 6-1 loss to the Blue Jackets to finish the year was an embarrassment of an effort, to be sure, but in so losing, the Islanders secured the 10th-best lottery odds, and with that a 3.5 percent shot of moving into the top three and of gaining the No. 1 overall pick. Going into the day, an Islanders win combined with a Rangers loss would have dropped them to the 11th-best lottery odds.

Here’s a bet that might actually be safer than Aleksander Barkov winning a second-straight Selke Trophy: The Islanders won’t carry nine defensemen on their roster to start next season. Pelech, who left the 1-0 win over the Devils with a bloodied face, slamming his helmet down and screaming at Cotter, was cleared to return for the Islanders’ home finale Tuesday against the Capitals. “I obviously wasn’t cleared to come back into [Sunday’s] game,” Pelech said before the 3-1 loss to the Capitals.

One moment Matt Martin was joking about his emotions, saying his wife would be happy to hear him say he was feeling something ahead of what’s presumed to be his last home game with the Islanders. The next, all the emotion was pouring out of him at once, a wave that’s been building all season crashing like a tsunami. Martin took a long pause. He put his head down. His lip quivered. “I’ve been so proud to wear this jersey and be a part of this team and community,” he said.
