Note: this piece starts with a long rant followed by an essay about a recent trip to New Jersey. There was a brief period following COVID when air travel was marvelous. The airlines had lost so much money during the pandemic that they were desperate to get passengers back onto their metal. We saw a mass proliferation of high quality soft and hard product roll outs; Aircraft had been delivered, renovated, or at least cleaned, during the pandemic while lounges were given facelifts.

A few months back my travel plans got disrupted by a major snowstorm followed by the Delta crash at Pearson. At the time, I wrote that Air Canada had excellent systems in place but that the double-whammy of snow and crash overwhelmed the airline’s abilities. On my most recent trip, I discovered a fatal flaw in Air Canada’s systems which, even if marginal, speak to a general frustration many passengers articulate about the airline. Long story short Air Canada lost my wife’s bag.

Evan Johnson·Follow11 min read·--One should think about airlines as being in the time management game. They have X number of planes going to and from Y number of locations carrying Z number of passengers. But there is only W amount of time available in a day. That time though is not equal to 24 hours. Instead, you have to think that there are pockets of time spread throughout the network. If a plane is on time, then it consumes a certain amount of time, if it is delayed then it eats up more time.
