The Phillies' acquisition of starting pitcher Jesús Luzardo from the Marlins this offseason seemed like a depth move, meant to help gently strengthen a loaded pitching staff. But then for 11 glorious starts, he looked like an ace — and the trade looked like a master stroke from front office chief Dave Dombrowski. Then came 12 runs allowed against the Brewers, and eight more Thursday afternoon in Toronto. A whopping 20 runs in 5.2 innings, after just 16 in his dominating starts prior.

The Eagles' offense was better than the defense in a relatively uneventful practice. The Eagles partook in their second official OTA practice open to media members Tuesday, and it was clear that the offense was a little ahead of the defense in the early going. A few other things were also clear: The offense, mainly Jalen Hurts and backup Tanner McKee, threw extremely conservative passes all afternoon down at the NovaCare Complex in South Philly.

The Phillies have hit the skids, losers of four in a row after an eight-game winning streak. The summer is fast arriving, and before the team knows it, it'll be trade season. In order to solidify their standing as one of the true contenders in the National League, the Phils are going to need some help in the bullpen, and potentially in the outfield.

It was kind of a weird one. Bryce Harper got hurt (hit in the elbow by a pitch). Runs were brutally hard to come by. A rainy Wednesday forced a doubleheader on Thursday. The Phillies didn't exactly dominate in their series win against the Braves this week, but they continued playing extraordinary winning baseball — improving to 19-7 in the month of May. Bookended by a shutout and 9-3 drubbing, the Phils won in a dogfight in a middle game that saw the clubs combine for 23 hits to take the series 2-1.

There's no way to say it without sounding cliche, the Phillies are on a Rocky Mountain high. One of the worst teams in recent memory put up very little fight against Philadelphia this week, which piled up the hits while securing the best record in the National League through 49 games. The Phillies flexed offensively in the thin air of Coors Field, corralling a ridiculous 46 hits over the first three games of the four-game series before falling back to Earth with just four in the finale Thursday.
