Ten years ago, the Olympic Tavern in Rockford, Illinois, often had up to 30 beers on draft. In 2025? Not so much. “That was the height of craft beer—it was easy to keep 28 handles on tap,” says Zak Rotello, the bar’s third-generation owner. “Now, fast-forward 10 years and I have less beer on tap than ever: 21 beers out of a total of 30 handles. The others are wine and spirits.”It’s not just Rockford.

For generations, draft beer in the U.S. was mostly just that: beer that was drawn (or “drafted”) from a tap. It was simple and usually pretty good, so widely recognized as better than beer packaged for retail that big breweries occasionally played tricks with the name, offering bottles and cans of products like Miller Genuine Draft and Guinness Draught that were anything but draft (or even draught).

Recently, Catoctin Creek Distillery was about to close two new distribution deals that would bring its award-winning rye whiskeys to customers in Quebec and France. With craft spirits and other small businesses facing big headwinds, new exports could have provided the award-winning Virginia producer with a welcome lift. When Devin “DJ” Ballard heard his name announced as the winner of Elijah Craig and VinePair’s 2025 A New Era of the Old Fashioned Cocktail Contest, he had trouble believing what was happening. “They call my name and I’m just like, ‘No, I must be mishearing this,” he says. “They’re handing me the trophy and I’m looking around. I’m just like, ‘Oh my God.’”As one of just five finalists, Ballard knew he was up against some truly excellent bartenders. “Everyone there was so good,” he says.

I’m genuinely sorry about this place. It was a big part of my life for many years, and I hate what it turned into. Plenty of people I love are no longer here. But quite a few still are. I’m torn. I don’t want the jerks to win. But I don’t want to hang out with jerks, either. 1/X
