The first big step to build an expansion franchise is the special expansion draft. The NFL has held eight expansion drafts in its history, and the most recent ones have happened in 1995 (Jacksonville Jaguars and Carolina Panthers), 1999 (new Cleveland Browns) and 2002 (Houston Texans). The rules vary depending on era and reality, but also on how willing the league is to allow the new team to be good from the get go.

If Lane can develop into a receiving threat in Year 1, it'll be a big boost for the Commanders passing attack and the offense as a whole. The Top-2 options at receiver are obviously set with Terry McLaurin and Deebo Samuel, but nothing is established after them. Noah Brown would be considered the leading candidate for the WR3 job in terms of target share, but he has to stay healthy in order for that to fully come to fruition.

Outside of the perfect in-season layout of one game per week and very short 18-week regular season, parity is why the NFL reigns supreme over all the other American sports. Each fanbase has a reason to be excited about its respective team's prospects just about every year and most even have a reason to think the season could end with a Lombardi Trophy in hand.

The Washington Commanders only made five picks in the 2025 NFL Draft, but there are specific reasons to be excited about each one. For fourth-rounder Jaylin Lane, it's his abilities to make guys miss in space as both a receiver and punt returner. He demonstrated that on the regular at Middle Tennessee State and Virginia Tech and it's a big reason why the Commanders drafted him. Lane isn't a one-trick pony at receiver, either.

Yes, it's still May. However, it's a crucial time to start laying the groundwork for the upcoming season. There are some important elements established at this time of year like team bonding and new players getting acclimated to their updated surroundings, among other things. It's always encouraging to hear new players finding their way early-on, whether they're rookies or veterans or in-between.
