Shame on you, Dan Evans. Where is your respect for Napa County’s Winery Definition Ordinance (WDO)? While most wineries respect the WDO, others have challenged it over the years. A handful of wineries were permitted prior to the WDO. But all the rest are expected to honor the rules and appropriate uses in their permits. The WDO’s goal is to keep wineries, wineries — not art galleries, wedding venues or restaurants. Special events are allowed as defined in use permits.

Occupying one relatively modest gallery, this rather niche show at the New-York Historical Society punches far above its weight. During my visits, I keep overhearing emotions expressed, especially wistfulness and astonishment. Visitors reminisce about the ambitious fashion choices of their youth and their foremothers’ tastes in dowdy or psychedelic housecoats.

The predawn earthquake woke us up with a jolt. We put on shoes, grabbed a flashlight, and headed downstairs. At our house, the shaking was distinctly E-W. Fortunately, all our kitchen cabinet doors never opened so all our dishes and glasses were intact. Only a few large red wine glasses broke as they sat on an open shelf. My husband and I headed back upstairs until dawn. As the sun rose, we made coffee for my husband and tea for me and walked around our court to see if anyone needed help.

During the Titanic's maiden voyage, musicians played pianos from Steinway & Sons to entertain passengers with waltzes and opera overtures. A twin of one of the ship's Steinway instruments has been found in northern England, and a new nonprofit organization is gearing up to return it to the limelight. The gilt-trimmed walnut upright, now at the showroom of Besbrode Pianos in Leeds, was commissioned in 1912 for the Titanic's sister ship, the Olympic.
