Liviu Caprar sleept nog steeds zijn rolkoffer mee; hij is woensdag met het vliegtuig uit Boekarest aangekomen voor de ECCEN-conferentie in Apeldoorn (European Conference for Christian Education in the Netherlands). ’s Avonds leidde hij de Bijbelstudie tijdens de opening. De ECCEN-conferentie wordt elke twee jaar gehouden. Deze week zijn er 85 deelnemers uit heel Europa, inclusief Oekraïne. Er zijn ook bezoekers uit Israël, Pakistan en Nieuw-Zeeland.

Liviu Caprar is still carrying his roller suitcase, as he arrived by plane from Bucharest on Wednesday to visit the ECCEN conference in Apeldoorn (European Conference for Christian Education in the Netherlands). In the evening, he conducts the opening Bible study. The conference is held every two years, and this week, it has attracted 70 participants from 17 European countries, including Ukraine.

Voor het eerst in bijna zeventig jaar woont Iain Murray alleen. Vorig jaar stierf zijn vrouw Jean. In de 69 jaar ervoor deden ze altijd alles samen. Zij las alles wat hij schreef voordat het naar de drukker ging. Na zijn pensionering eind jaren negentig waren ze soms maanden van huis, om in Australië en de Verenigde Staten te preken en lezingen te geven.

Zelf tikte ik in 1997 een heruitgave van dit boekje op de kop (vermoedelijk uit 1964, uitgegeven door H.J.W. Becht). Ik trof het op een grote boekendump. Daar lagen tientallen exemplaren van dat boekje. Onder Nederlandse christenen moet Lagerlöf brede bekendheid hebben gehad. Er zijn in Nederland nog steeds straten met haar naam. Haar verhalen hebben iets geheimzinnigs. Het aardse en hemelse raken elkaar.

I myself got to know her in 1997. At a large book dump, I picked up a re-issue from 1964 of the Dutch version of Christ Legends (‘Christuslegenden’). At that dump were dozens of copies of that book there. Among Dutch Christians, Lagerlöf must have been widely known. Not only after 1900, when this translation was published first, but also later in the 60s. There are still streets with her name in the Netherlands. Most of the short stories by Lagerlöf have something mysterious.
