1. IntroductionIn this paper, I propose a stratal phonological account of stem- and word-level stratal effects accounting for the non-uniform realization of compensatory vowel lengthening posited to have accompanied Old French (OF, approximately 11th–14th centuries) coda /s/ deletion, yielding superficial analogical effects within morphologically-related words as well as opacity in others where there is an unexpected mismatch between vowel lengthening and stress assignment.
