In the sociological imagination, capitalism is now regarded as a sin standing next to sexism and racism. Routinely, sociologists call for their colleagues and students to oppose capitalism and use their classrooms as places where people can understand the repressive nature of “neoliberalism.”In fact, a former president of the American Sociological Association, Michael Burawoy, argued in his presidential address that one of the main purposes of sociology is to stand in opposition to capitalism.

The 21st century has been a time of immense global protest. With the Green Movement in 2009, Iran saw its biggest protests since the 1979 revolution, as thousands of people rose up to demand more honest elections. In the Middle East, we saw the Arab Spring in 2011 topple authoritarian states. In 2014, the "Umbrella Movement" pushed back against the Hong Kong government to demand transparency and democracy.

War movies shape public memory—and our remembrance of World War II most of all, since it was the moment America ascended to its current eminence among world powers. The memory we have of WWII, to the extent we have one, is formed by Saving Private Ryan and especially Band of Brothers. Peaceful liberals like Steven Spielberg, the all-American wizard of the end of the twentieth century, and Tom Hanks, who acted as the moral conscience of America, are our guides.
