1. Introduction Almost 1 million adults in the United States suffer a myocardial infarction (MI) every year (1). In surviving patients, MI often progresses to heart failure (2). The pathophysiology of MI is characterized by transient or permanent ischemia to a portion of the left ventricle (LV), which undergoes necrotic myocyte death followed by a robust inflammatory response. Inflammation orchestrates tissue healing and remodeling to form a permanent scar (2–5).
