I’ve always been a fan of reusing old things and turning them into something new—which I later learned is called upcycling.Whether it was turning an old peanut butter jar into a container for my pens or making a scarf out of an old T-shirt, upcycling has been part of my life for quite some time. Bitch is one of those catch-all phrases commonly used against women. A woman is off-putting? She’s a bitch. Opinionated? What a bitch. Exhibits more masculine traits? Such a bitch. Refuses to sleep with a man? How can she be such a bitch. I can’t count the times I’ve heard men call women bitches, either in real life or online. Even when men get called bitches, it’s usually because they’re acting “feminine,” hence the often-used insult “little bitch” when referring to “weak” men.

Feminism is the true F-word, the most provocative word you could use in any setting. As soon as the word leaves your lips, discourse breaks out on the internet over feminism’s inherent meaning and why it’s a bad thing to call yourself a feminist. I can’t count the number of times I’ve seen or heard people mocking feminism in everyday life. But why is there so much controversy around calling yourself a feminist?
