A commonly uttered phrase in movement organizing spaces is: “Those who are closest to the problem are closest to the solutions.” Yet, too often, those with lived experiences are left out of the decision-making process. Such is the case for formerly incarcerated people. Both men experienced how easy it is for young Black men to be swept up in the criminal legal system.
