With this, I have completed forty four articles published by this esteemed newspaper. I am immensely grateful for the feedback, constructive or critical, I received from the readers. No matter the topic of my pieces, from bizarre to dejecting, I kept writing. Whenever I happened to be low on my wheels, GK came as a medium through which I channeled my bitterness, sourness, and sadness.

When we come across something that makes us feel uncomfortable, we either stand up to it or we back off. The former doesn’t cause problems, as emotions are shot forth and done and dusted there only. The real danger begins when we repress our emotions without finding a healthy outlet. We might feel safe avoiding sticking up for ourselves, but the emotions buried keep accumulating in the unconscious. They don’t die—they just pile up.

Shock waves wash over the whole of Kashmir as innocent tourists fell victim to the evil forces in Pahalgam recently. It pains me to see the tourists crying and traumatized, mourning over the irrevocable losses. It’s a deed that even the worst of humans don’t endorse. It’s a tragedy. Words just fall short. That said, I feel compelled to point out that Islam doesn’t approve of killings. Comments and seething anger and misplaced blame over social media target Islam for the violence.

Of late, I struggled to cross the road at Lalchowk. It felt as if generations would pass on without me finding myself on the other side of it. The rush of vehicles passing and the sound of “Puu-Puu” on one side, and me and a couple of others on the other—frustratingly disoriented. While the former might have reasonably reached their destinations in time, we helplessly wasted minutes and waited for divine intervention to put a pause on it.

The world has undergone a major shift with respect to everything: feelings that we shouldn’t express, personal opinions that don’t count, and sharing and caring that are deadwood now. Everything has become stiff and stern vis-à-vis human approaches. I fear the moment to come where a genuine query may translate into a sin committed, the gravity of which will have no place amid the ever-occupied humans. I fail to fathom why humans have turned stony enough to place everything in a dustbin.
