Official results from Saturday’s presidential election in Ghana have confirmed the victory of opposition candidate, former President John Mahama. With results in from all of the country’s 16 regions, Mahama won with 56.6% against 41.6% for Vice-President Mahamudu Bawumia. It is the biggest margin of victory in 24 years. Voter turnout was 60.9%, said the head of Ghana’s electoral commission, Jean Mensa.

Ghana’s Vice-President Mahamudu Bawumia has accepted defeat in Saturday’s election and congratulated former President John Mahama on his victory. “The people have voted for change,” said Bawumia. The elections come amid the country’s worst economic crisis in a generation, which saw the country default on its debt. Despite Bawumia’s concession, no official results have been declared.

Mercury is increasingly being used to extract gold by miners digging on a massive scale in forests and farms, degrading land and polluting rivers to such an extent that the charity WaterAid has called it "ecocide".
