2016 was a strong year for horror movies. The Witch, The Conjuring 2, The Invitation, and Ouija: Origin of Evil are among the few scary movies that made a notable impact in the same year that the MCU and Star Wars franchises dominated the box office. Warner Bros. not only won in horror territory with The Conjuring 2, but also released David F. Sandberg's debut before he went on to make two Shazam! films.

One of the driving forces behind today's cinema industry is fandom. Whether studios admit it or not, fan-service is a real thing, and with the use of the multiverse, we've seen audiences go wild with fan theories connecting iconic films. Shared universes have been around since the dawn of cinema, and in the 1980s, two of the most iconic movies of the decade took place in the same universe. There was no need for a multiverse, unnecessary sequels, or Easter eggs.

Scream's original writer, Kevin Williamson, has made a shocking revelation about Scream 2, the 1997 sequel to the slasher film that changed the rules of the horror game. Williamson, a Scream veteran who has now gotten the chance to direct the upcoming Scream 7, says that while Wes Craven created the franchise, he wasn't always supposed to direct Scream 2. Another iconic horror filmmaker from the 1990s was meant to direct the project: Robert Rodriguez.
