    by Felicity WongA Heritage Festival walking tour made us consider that the universe doesn’t end with its physical manifestations; common to all religions is a spiritual endeavour and exploring the place of humanity in creation and society. The Theosophical Society discusses those ideas on Tuesdays at 7pm and everyone’s apparently welcome at its “lodge”, an intriguing little building on Marion Street, which was the start of our tour.

Opened in 1957, it was a building that projected New Zealand’s export-based prosperity in a modern world. Minister of Agriculture (later Prime Minister) Keith Holyoake was pictured looking out a top floor window from the Meat and Dairy Boards’ headquarters.

In 1943 the Evening Post reported that Labour’s Housing Minister Bob Semple had purchased a two acre site which had been “for many years one of the beauty spots in the city” and had “an interesting history”. The site had two houses on it. The smaller (“Dalmuir Hill”) was one of the oldest dwellings in the city, built in the early 1840s for Mr. M. K. Strang (registrar of the Supreme Court and Presbyterian Church agent).
