    Prisons in Kenya have for long been plagued by overcrowding, poor diet, lack of clean water, poor sanitation, diseases and other challenges. Overcrowding, for one, is mostly due to the large number of remandees, many of whom are unable to raise bail and others waiting for their cases to be heard in court. The time taken to process appeals is also lengthy, further contributing to overcrowding.

    National leaders have been engaged in a heated debate with many urging Kenyans to plant trees to curb climate change. The UN’s Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) says the 33 million acres of forest land lost yearly are responsible for 20 per cent of human-caused greenhouse gas emissions. The main causes of forest destruction include the need to produce wood and paper products, mining and oil exploration, urbanisation, acid rain and wildfire.

    Of late, authorities in various public and private universities have implemented regulations on the attire and glooming of their students, focusing on their effects on the student community. However, critics, especially students, feel that such regulations curtail constitutional rights and freedoms. For instance, citing Article 33 of the Constitution, which spells out freedom of expression, they say restrictions on certain outfits are like denying students their freedom of expression.
