HUNGARIAN State Railways (MÁV) is considering the results of a preliminary market consultation on the purchase of up to 285 inter-city coaches. The deadline for submissions was January 31, following a request to interested parties issued in December 2024. The operator is asking for six variants as follows:16 first class coaches169 second class coaches16 first class dining coaches51 first class driving trailers16 low-floor coaches with multi-use areas, and17 low-floor bicycle/baggage coaches.

Hungarian logistics company Waberer’s Group has purchased 62.5% of GySEV shares. HUNGARIAN logistics business Waberer’s Group has signed a contract to buy 62.5% of the shares in GySEV Cargo, the second largest rail freight operator in Hungary. The remaining minority stake in GySEV Cargo will continue to be held by the Hungarian government via the Győr-Sopron-Ebenfurth railway (GySEV), which arranged the part-sale of its subsidiary.

Austria no longer has a board-level veto on decisions made by the bi-laterally owned railway. THE Hungarian government has succeeded in obtaining Austrian construction company Strabag’s 6.1% stake in Győr-Sopron-Ebenfurth railway (GySEV). The Austrian competition authority has approved the deal, increasing the Hungarian state’s stake from 65.6% to 71.7%. The remainder continues to be held by the Austrian government.

HUNGARY’s transport minister, Mr János Lázár, has announced the restructuring of state railway group MÁV under a new management team that will deliver an action plan to improve the quality of passenger services. MÁV will be reorganised as a holding company with three subsidiaries, comprising an infrastructure manager, a single passenger operator combining MÁV-Start, Budapest commuter operator MÁV-HÉV and bus company Volánbusz, and a support services company.

Hungarian state operator plans to purchase 95 EMUs.MÁV-Start currently operates 123 Stadler Flirt EMUs. HUNGARIAN State Railways (MÁV-Start) has begun a revised market consultation for the procurement of 95 EMUs. The consultation replaces a preliminary market consultation launched in July 2023 for 80 EMUs, each with between 200 and 300 seats.

CHINESE rolling stock manufacturers CRRC Zhuzhou Electric Locomotive (CRRC Zelc) and CRRC Shandong have signed agreements with Acemil of Hungary to cooperate in the field of rolling stock production, which will see new production facilities established in Hungary.

THE Hungarian government announced on May 9 the formation of working groups to initiate the construction of two major rail projects in and around Budapest. The announcement came after Chinese president Mr Xi Jinping concluded a state visit to Hungary. Prior to his arrival, Hungarian foreign secretary, Mr Péter Szijjártó, stated during a visit to Beijing on April 24 that the Hungarian railway network could develop faster with Chinese funding linked to the latter’s Belt and Road initiative.
