Aštuntojo dešimtmečio viduryje trys žymūs politologai – Michelis Crozier, Samuelis Huntingtonas ir Joji’s Watanuki’s – paskelbė garsųjį pranešimą apie Vakarų demokratijos krizę. Jų manymu, nuosmukį sukėlė pernelyg dideli socialiniai reikalavimai. Paradoksalu, bet jų pranešimas sutapo su demokratizacijos bangos, per 15 metų daug kur pasaulyje, įskaitant Pietų ir Rytų Europą, nušlavusios diktatūras, pradžia. 1975 m. maždaug 57 procentai Europos šalių buvo demokratinės, 1990 m.

The 2021 local elections in Croatia were an unprecedented success for green and left political forces, especially in the capital of Zagreb. Headed by the political platforms Zagreb je naš (Zagreb is ours, ZJN) and Možemo (We can), the Green-Left Coalition won 40.83% of the popular vote, gaining 23 out of 48 seats in the Zagreb City Assembly. Its mayoral candidate, Tomislav Tomašević, attracted almost 200,000 voters in the run-off, a record number.

Like their predecessors in the 1920s and 1930s, today’s populists understand that by dividing society and delegitimising their adversaries, they can get away with blatant violations of the democratic rules. They aim to fuel discontent and toxic polarisation, which transform public debate into tribal wars.
