1 Introduction Ionic Liquids (ILs) are a subcategory of molten salts (tm < 100 °C), of which the first known example is Walden's ethylammonium nitrate, reported over a century ago.[1] After fading into obscurity for much of this time, ILs recently reclaimed some limelight after researchers intuited that “designer chemistry” was possible for ILs,[2] by judiciously selecting chemical moieties appropriate for the desired functionality.
