1 Introduction Severe COVID-19 is characterized by interstitial pneumonitis, acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) and a high associated mortality. Alveolar macrophages (AMs) are the most numerous immune cells of the lung and are its resident, sentinel immunocytes that summon other innate and adaptive cells and instruct their activation. AMs are known to be important in the host's defence against viral infections such as influenza A [1, 2].
