The US president, Donald Trump, has put global leaders ill at ease with his threat of tariffs. After announcing and then delaying tariffs on Canada and Mexico, hitting Chinese goods with an additional 10% tariff and also threatening the European Union, countries and markets are concerned about where the US president will go next. Trump’s policies come at a time when the US operates a large negative trade balance with the rest of the world.

On the morning of 9 October 2023, the Trans area of the open market in Jabaliya refugee camp was bustling. Two days into the Gaza war triggered by Hamas’s surprise attack in Israel, it had yet to be hit by Israeli jets. The camp, just north of the city of the same name, was established in 1948. Though technically still a refugee camp, in the ensuing decades it had become largely indistinguishable from the rest of northern Gaza’s urban sprawl – densely populated, vibrant and busy.

The FBI is investigating what it has described as an attempted assassination of Donald Trump after Secret Service agents spotted the muzzle of a rifle poking through the fence close to where the former US president was playing golf at his club in Florida. A suspect has been arrested and an assault rifle was recovered at the course. The incident occurred at the Trump International Golf Club in West Palm Beach.
