When it comes to finding nature within the city, it’s hard to top Seward Park. This mostly forested park, situated on a peninsula that juts into Lake Washington from southeast Seattle, contains 120 acres of old-growth trees—the biggest stand within the city of Seattle. The path along its shoreline is the longest you can walk along Lake Washington without waving in someone’s window. It’s a nice little escape into greenery and birdsong; no freeway driving is required.

Take turns picking two up and revealing what they are. If you find a pair of matching cards, you get to keep them and do a second turn.

It’s a pleasurable, gliding movement through stunning winter environments. It’s an easy skill to pick up – easier than downhill skiing or snowboarding. Only snowshoeing (best described as laborious walking) has less of a skill barrier. You can easily go out without a lesson, provided there’s an adult around who can give you pointers.

Kids are great collectors, so here’s a fun fall outdoor activity for them:Whether it’s trading cards or bottle caps or seashells, they like to accumulate a variety of specimens, and then sort them and arrange them by category or type. And fall is a good time for those who like collecting, with trees dropping leaves and seeds, and sometimes other things. Though these should only be temporary collections. A few of the things you find in the woods will stay the same after you collect them.
