Preparing alongside the inaugural Swiss women’s team was the Swiss men’s Homeless World Cup team. The Swiss men’s team has been attending the tournament for some time—since the tournament’s inception in 2003—but 2024 marked the first time Switzerland was able to field both a distinct men’s and women’s team.

Like many of the Homeless World Cup teams, the German team players were selected from different programs all over their region and met just a few days before the tournament. The entire German program is volunteer-run, so funding and opportunities to bring players together earlier can be challenging.

Liutauras Fafalavicius was the goalkeeper for the Lithuanian team at that 2006 tournament. He, like many of the players who have been involved with the programme have since found employment and are now giving back to the programme to help sustain its work. He, like his teammates, quietly make their way through the tournament each year to both provide current players with support and to treat the tournament as a kind of touchstone. But the work and influence continues year-round.

It was serendipitous and much welcome, then, that the first friendly team faces, Ron from the Australian team encountered at the 2024 Homeless World Cup were from Hong Kong. Ron’s family emigrated to Australia while in he was in primary school.
