1 INTRODUCTION Life expectancy is a key indicator of population health and well-being. It reflects the effectiveness of health systems, the adoption of healthy-living behaviors and the prevalence of disease in the community, as well as the availability and distribution of economic resources. In the last 100 years, there have been substantial increases in longevity worldwide. However, there is growing evidence that these gains are not being shared equally across different socio-economic groups.

7 CONCLUSION There have been striking falls in average death rates across the Australian population in the last 50, and even 20 years, as there has been across most other countries in the world. However, for Australia there is a gap in the literature regarding whether and how these longevity gains are distributed across the population. Are there people who are being left behind?
