    09 December 2024The media coverage of the August NAPLAN results was deeply disheartening at a time of concern about teacher retention. Despite phrases in headlines such as “shameful NAPLAN results”, “students failing”, “epic fail”, and “students sink to new lows”, the results show that these attention-grabbing headlines are misguided and unhelpful, and there is, in fact, no long-term NAPLAN results decline.

They are growing up in a world increasingly volatile, unpredictable and filled with unprecedented challenges and they’re seeing it play out every day through their news feeds. They are bearing the burden of humanity under threat: climate change, global conflict and political extremism. This often leaves young people in a state of crisis.

    Yet they also report some positive news, with leaders showing strong levels of resilience and a high work commitment. Australia isn’t alone in these concerns. For instance, a study of senior school leaders and head teachers in the UK reported that 29 pert cent were “sinking”, 42 per cent said they had been mostly surviving, and only 28 per cent said they were thriving. Worryingly, leaders in primary schools and females were more likely to be sinking.
