How did you become interested in historical fiction set in the American South? I went to university in the United States. I wasn’t in the South; I was in Massachusetts, but I got very into Southern literature while I lived there. In my late teens and early twenties I was obsessed with the place, the literature, and the music as well. I read masses over that period of time, and periodically I revisit it.
