On Thursday, 16 January 2025, Cracker played to a sold-out crowd at the State Theatre in Falls Church, Virginia on a very cold night. Not surprised it’s a sold-out show since this is their home turf. The demographic comprised largely of Gen Xers out for the late weeknight show to hear the soundtrack to some of their best times in the 1990s.

On 22 December, Smash! Records hosted a killer book release party for author and owner Bill Sassenberger of Toxic Ranch Records. The evening consisted of a Q & A session with Bill about his book titled Toxic Shock Records: Assassin of Mediocrity – A Story of Love, Loss and Loud Music published by Fluke and an incredible set by DC’s own female-fronted punk band, Bed Maker. Fans, friends, and customers filled Smash! Records where it was warm.

On 14 December, The Jesus Lizard and Shadow Riot performed a SOLD OUT show at the popular music venue, the Black Cat. This was the first of two nights for The Jesus Lizard. Fans lined up in the cold for a couple of hours before the doors opened a 8 pm. DC’s own Shadow Riot put on a killer opening set at 9 pm and The Jesus Lizard performed at 10 pm and ended the show with his clothes on.

On 22 August, the National Building Museum hosted a Late Night at the Museum which featured DC punk band Scream, a DJ set by Mathias, and the Capital Brutalism Exhibition that featured photos, designs, and blueprints of “ugly” buildings around Washington, DC. The museum venue for a punk show. Let’s hope they do more. DC punk band Scream’s current members are Pete Stahl on vox, Franz Stahl on guitar, Skeeter Thompson on bass, Jerry Busher on drums, and Clint Walsh on guitar.

On 30 November, The Black Cat in Washington, DC hosted Smash Records‘ 40th Anniversary with a killer show featuring bands from Des Demonas, The Goons, Lorelei, and NØ Man. Located in the Capital City’s Adams Morgan neighborhood, Smash Records opened its doors in 1984 selling records, clothing and everything in between. It’s still the place to go for punk to alternative music. The eclectic showcase kept the night entertaining.

On 1 November, I had the privilege of hanging out with friends who took me to see City Mouse, Plaster, and Crimson Riot at the Red Dwarf. Located on the East Side of Las Vegas, the Red Dwarf is known for their Detroit-style pizzas and live music. If you find yourself in Vegas, this place is worth a visit!City Mouse is a California-based pop punk band. The band’s energy on stage was and I was immediately drawn to Dee’s voice. It’s powerful and punchy and will resonate with you for days.

DC Punk Archive celebrated the 10th Anniversary Fest with community events throughout October. Bands like Hammered Hulls, The Messthetics, and Flowers for the Dead took to the stage on a perfect day and spinning from DJ Crown Vic. Film screenings of Punk the Capital and Scream Meets the Hangmen, DIY craft nights creating zines, screen printing, record booths, and Q&A with DC illustrator, Evan Keeling at Lost Origins Gallery.

The Pie Shop in Washington, DC hosted a great show with headlining band Change Today featuring Joe Wood, former vocalist of T.S.O.L. Bands from DC and Baltimore shared the stage and it was great to see the up and coming bands play to an appreciative audience. Joe Wood, who was in T.S.O.L. from 1983 to 1993 formed Change Today which is named for the first T.S.O.L. album he sang on. Change Today includes Joe Wood -vox and guitar, Jimi Zolo-guitar, Marc Campbell – bass, and Chris Ogard -drums.

On 12 October, Comet Ping Pong hosted a sold out show with headliner band Black Eyes with supporting band Bed Maker in Washington, DC. Dying Scene was there to capture the two DC bands play until midnight with the same energy that they started off with. This was a killer show.
