SignificanceAdenosine triphosphate (ATP), the energy currency of living cells, is synthesized by ATP synthase. We show how the membrane potential created by oxidizing food stuff in mitochondria drives the directional rotary motion of this enzyme complex. From molecular dynamics simulations, we determine the free energy surfaces for the rotation of its membrane-anchored c-ring in different protonation states.
