The toll wreaked from the events of September 17 and 18 has been extensive. According to the best estimates, more than 3,500 people were injured and thirty-seven were killed. The events I’m referring to, of course, were the sudden and surprise explosions of thousands of electronic devices, carried (in the majority) by members of Hezbollah in Lebanon.

The French philosopher Simone Weil, who died of self-starvation and tuberculosis in a Kent sanatorium in 1943 at the age of thirty-four, remains a conundrum. “Mais elle est folle!” had been the spluttering response of Charles de Gaulle the previous year, during her short wartime period analyzing reports for the Free French in London. Her simple brief was to précis the ideas coming in from the Resistance movement on how to reconstruct France after liberation.

Kaos is a new Netflix gods-and-monsters black-comedy blockbuster that will scorch your screen and fry your brain like a thunderbolt from Zeus. It’s sick, cynical, brutal and very, very dark but it’s so well acted, ingeniously plotted, moving, inventive, funny and addictive that I fear resistance may be futile.

Dante’s Beach, RavennaIn my life I have nearly killed myself mainly with cigarettes and alcohol and dangerous journeys into the night. I have experienced what awaits you in those places but it is not the sort of thing you can easily talk about or even put into words. It is perhaps too secret.
