In one of Babygirl’s first scenes, AI girlboss Romy (Nicole Kidman) and newbie intern Samuel (Harris Dickinson) have their meet-cute when Samuel subdues an unleashed dog outside their office. In the scene, the huge black dog wildly bites a New York pedestrian, then charges at Romy full speed before Samuel, out of nowhere, reverses the dog’s course with a single command.

We probably should have finished watching Emilia Pérez months ago. This is a buzzy precedent-setting film with a transgender lead actress that has become a major awards season contender. You’d think the trans staffers at our little gay website would have clicked play immediately upon the film’s November Netflix release, if for no other reason than to chime in on the ensuing controversy. It’s a Spanish-language cartel musical that includes a song about vaginoplasty.
