Columbia University Morningside Heights campus is on lockdown after student protesters stormed into Hamilton Hall and occupied the lecture building in the early hours of Tuesday. Access is restricted to students living in dorms within the campus gates and essential personnel. Classes are being taught remotely. The only access point into and out of campus is the 116th Street and Amsterdam gate.

Columbia officials said they had begun suspending students unwilling to leave the Gaza Solidarity Encampment. On Monday morning, after Columbia University President Minouche Shafik announced negotiations had ended without an agreement, the school asked protesters to leave the camp voluntarily before 2 p.m. or face disciplinary actions. But the students vowed to stay put.

Negotiations between Columbia University officials and students protesting on the West Lawn of campus have ended without an agreement, Columbia President Minouche Shafik announced in a statement on Monday morning. Acknowledging that a group of academic leaders and student protesters had been negotiating since Wednesday and that those conversations had not produced any meaningful results, Shafik asked those at the Gaza Solidarity Encampment to follow the university policies and vacate the lawn.
