AbstractMechanosensory hair cells of the inner ear are vulnerable to environmental insult, with damage resulting in hearing and balance disorders. Hair cells are sensitive to exposure to toxic agents including therapeutic drugs such as the aminoglycoside antibiotics neomycin and gentamicin. Here we describe distinct mechanisms for aminoglycoside-induced cell death in zebrafish lateral line hair cells.
