1 Introduction Over the past 30 years, there has been an increasing recognition that evolutionary and genetic processes are important factors to consider in conservation management and recovery planning owing to their effects on both individual fitness and population performance. More recently, the deliberate improvement of species’ genetic diversity with the goal of ameliorating the risk of extinction and increasing population viability has become formalized as the concept of genetic rescue.
