Fertile Ground, an organic and unpredictable festival of greater Portland talent, is celebrating its 16th year by presenting 64 new shows in all stages of development over the course of 16 jam-packed days. Making it easy to get to your neighborhood theaters, venues are scattered throughout the metro area, including Hillsboro, Beaverton, Milwaukie and Lake Oswego, in addition to theaters on both sides of the river in Portland.

I wake up, and I open Instagram. I walk to class, and I’m scrolling through Instagram. I finish a homework problem, and I’m back on Instagram! Being a meme junky myself, the application provides some amazing content. At times, however, I feel enslaved to the dominant social media platform. It feels as if I’m in an endless cycle of continuous scrolling, liking, and sharing posts. Hours pass and I can’t seem to avoid the need to open the application once more.

February 2020, Mexico. One month before a pandemic and social isolation would ravage the entire world, I was walking with some friends through the historic center of Queretaro, located approximately three hours from Mexico City. After getting lost among cobbled streets, monuments, and churches, our attention was drawn to the stall of a man selling aviation art. Intrigued, we approached his booth, which featured finely detailed pencil drawings of World War II airplanes.
