The United Nations said it found "reasonable grounds" to believe that Israeli women were subjected to sexual violence, including rape, gang rape and "sexualized torture," across "several locations" on Oct. 7 during the attack by Hamas in southern Israel. The sexual abuse occurred in "at least" three locations, the report noted, describing two detailed incidents in one area, based on "credible information," and a third "verified" instance.

The committee is notorious for lengthy delays in granting approvals, and several UN member states on the committee have been accused of silencing NGOs they disagree with. That includes groups that might be critical of a country's records on human rights. Now, countries may soon have an opportunity to reform the committee and safeguard civil society's access to the UN.

Sigrid Kaag, a Dutch diplomat and former politician appointed in December by the United Nations as senior humanitarian and reconstruction coordinator for Gaza, has been meeting leaders since she began her job in January. She has gone to various points in the Mideast - Egypt, Israel, Jordan - as well as to Washington, Brussels and elsewhere, in line with her responsibility to oversee humanitarian relief consignments to the Israeli-besieged Palestinian enclave.

China, Lao People's Democratic Republic Asia 12 October 2023News Chinese human rights lawyer Lu Siwei has been nominated for the South Korean Gwangju Prize for Human Rights for his steadfast defence of activists targeted by the Chinese authorities. Arrested in July this year while transiting through Laos, he was returned back to China in late September, in a blunt violation of basic principles of international law.

On September 28-29, at an Interactive Dialogue with the UN Assistant Secretary-General, States at the Human Rights Council discussed the Secretary-General’s report on reprisals against human rights defenders that had cooperated with United Nations bodies, which was published a week earlier. Though the report mentions 40 countries that have carried out acts of reprisals, few States took the opportunity to hold the responsible governments to account by discussing specific individual cases.
