There’s a certain symmetry between the recent passing of former President Jimmy Carter and the impending departure of current President Joe Biden from the White House. Carter was a friend and hero to Biden. He was a fine and decent man; a Naval Academy grad in 1946 who worked on developing our nuclear submarine program and a good ex-president, exemplary in some ways. He built a lot of homes for Habitat for Humanity and taught Sunday School for the good people of Plains, Georgia, for decades.

Some people on the far left think we live in a pure democracy. We don’t. Others think we live in a pure republic. We do not. We live in a (take your pick) democratic republic, representative democracy or a self-elected self-government. The derivation of our two major political parties comes from the first official political party, the Democratic-Republican Party formed under Thomas Jefferson.

I was talking to a dear friend recently who has spent a lifetime in conscientious contemplation of life’s mysteries within the scope of the Christian Gospel. He wanted to talk about the recent revelations about Lt. Gov. Mark Robinson and, of course, Donald Trump. He asked how any Christian could possibly square the circle between personal character and political philosophy when it comes to voting for this or that candidate in a binary sense.
