There are 22 Texas children competing in this year's Scripps National Spelling Bee, including four from North Texas. Last year's second-place speller, 13-year-old Faizan Zaki, is back again this year competing against 242 other spelling bee champions from around the country. He's joined by three North Texas spellers: 14-year-old Shreyansh Zadoo, 12-year-old Avishka Dudala and 12-year-old Brihasa Veduru.

We're nearing the end of the road for the "Paper Tag Nation". In a little more than a month, the Texas Department of Motor Vehicles will stop issuing temporary paper license plates following a series of reports by NBC 5 Investigates that exposed how crooks made millions selling fraudulent paper tags for profit. In 2023, the Texas legislature set a plan in motion to eliminate paper tags later this summer.

The city of Fort Worth confirmed Tuesday that Executive Assistant Chief Robert Alldredge will be the interim chief of police when Neil Noakes retires at the end of the month. The City Council unanimously confirmed Alldredge on Tuesday after being appointed by City Manager Jay Chapa. In December 2024, Noakes told the city that he planned to retire on May 30 after 25 years with the police department, including four as chief. Noakes was named chief in January 2021 to replace Ed Kraus.
