The calendar has officially turned to September. The Phillies opened the day a whopping 14 games out of first place in the National League East. Nonetheless, the Phillies remain in the top wild card spot, 4.5 games ahead of other teams for wild card contention, and 3 full games ahead of the Chicago Cubs, the second wild card. The month of September also means expanded rosters. The Phillies cannot add a full 40-man roster as the rules have changed, but teams can add two extra players.

Six-man rotation? Not anymore. After the Phillies added new starter Michael Lorenzen, the plan was to give the other starting pitchers some rest in hopes of good health down the stretch. Just a couple weeks into that plan, one of the core Phillies starters is hitting the injured list. The Phillies announced that left-handed pitcher Ranger Suárez was placed on the 15-day injured list with a right hamstring strain. The move is retroactive to August 16.

It has been quite a while since Cole Hamels has taken a major league pitching mound. In fact, next month will mark three full years since he made a single appearance for the Atlanta Braves. Despite signing a minor league deal with the San Diego Padres this past offseason, that Braves appearance will be his last. The San Diego Padres announced that both Hamels and reliever Craig Stammen have decided to retire. Hamels never made an appearance for San Diego professionally.

The Phillies faced an old friend on Monday night in Jean Segura. There were plenty of hugs between Segura and his former teammates, in Miami to face the Marlins. Somewhat surprisingly, the Marlins traded Segura to the Cleveland Guardians just ahead of the trade deadline, when Segura was in the lineup to face the Phillies a few years later. Then before the ink on the paperwork dried, Segura was released.
