After sunset, the large balcony at Morton’s was filled with people, steaks and cigars. A few stories below, car headlights streamed along the streets of Washington, D.C. A half-dozen members of the national media were around my table at the end of the balcony. These were friends and acquaintances of my brother, Richard, who has spent his career as an author, pundit and media mogul—he has his own news service now—in and around Capitol Hill.

When interviewing someone whom everyone paying attention has seen and heard, and likely already has an opinion about, you can’t help but pause. First, because people will either like or dislike the interview based on what they already think of the famous person. But also, and more importantly, because it is too easy to get caught in the mental trap that you’re suddenly speaking with a person you’ve listened to for years.

A CBS 60 Minutes segment last February tried to put a face to President Donald Trump’s (R) new Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). In a feat of investigative journalism, they managed to catch three DOGE employees—Elon Musk’s “nerd army”—going to work. The three men were dressed as casually as Silicon Valley wonder kids typically are as they quietly went into the building.
