As every basketball fan knows by now, nine-time All-Star Damian Lillard tore his Achilles during Milwaukee’s recent (brief) playoff run. He got surgery on the injury on Friday, May 2, and is expected to miss the entirety of 2025-26 as he recovers.

The role of Sixth Man has changed throughout NBA history, with a few Boston Celtics players in the ’50s, ’60s and ’70s playing a large part in that. Today, different Sixth Men play different roles, with some being the first player off the bench for their scoring and playmaking, and others for their defense.

To celebrate the occasion, we are going to rank the Top 15 players of the upcoming playoffs based on how we think they are going to perform. Players fell a few spots in this ranking, or missed out altogether, based on their health, as well as on how far we believe their teams are going to go in the playoffs.

With the 2024-25 NBA regular season just about wrapped up, we asked our team of writers and editors to vote on their end-of-year ballots, which we then totaled to give out awards for the 2024-25 season. Just like the actual voting process is more than likely going to go, MVP, Defensive Player of the Year and Coach of the Year were the closest calls, with Sixth Man of the Year also having a couple of very convincing options that finished neck-and-neck in the vote.

The NBA world was rocked by another shock in-season firing on Tuesday when it was reported that the Denver Nuggets had fired head coach Michael Malone, along with general manager Calvin Booth. The firing was a historic one, as Malone is now tied with the legendary Hubie Brown for the distinction of having coached the most games in a season before being fired. Brown had coached the 1980-81 Atlanta Hawks for 79 games when he was fired.
