Ahead of the final game of the season against Arsenal on Sunday, we will be trekking over 32 miles in a day and a half from the Isle of Wight to our home, St Mary's. We will leave from the stadium this morning before boarding the Red Funnel to the Isle of Wight, where the bulk of our walking will be done. After staying overnight, we have more miles to do on the route back to St Mary's in time for tomorrow's 4pm kick-off.

I played at the historic stadium six times in my career, and won just once - a 2-0 victory on November 1, 1997. Goodison is one of the stadiums you would class as a classic from its era. It was a difficult place to play, and I'm sure there will be some players happy to see the back of it in that sense. The atmosphere was always fierce, and the tunnel leading out to the pitch is very narrow. You stood shoulder to shoulder with an opposition player.

Franny Benali (Image: SDE archive) MATT Le Tissier isn't the only former Saint who went behind the enemy lines at Fratton Park this past week. Last Saturday, I covered Portsmouth's final Championship game against Hull City, in which the Tigers avoided the drop. I can't say I've ever made a habit of going to Fratton Park. I only played in one first team fixture there during my playing career, and that came in a Nottingham Forest shirt.

Saints V Leicester. Benali celebrates his goal. (Image: Echo) I HAVE many memories of playing against Leicester City in my career, but one sticks out a lot more than the others. I only ever scored one goal in my career at Southampton, and it came against Leicester on December 13, 1997. Matt Le Tissier, a close friend and teammate for many years, found me in the box with a lovely free-kick delivery, and I beat Kasey Keller with a header.

Southampton interim manager Simon Rusk and interim assistant boss Adam Lallana (Image: PA) SIMON Rusk and Adam Lallana have both done a good job in their interim role, and winning a late point at West Ham was testament to the improvements they have made. While the football might not be as thrilling, Rusk has stripped us back to the basics, giving us a chance to claim points from any games - a feeling lost this season.
