Since the Republican debates in August 2023, there have been multiple assassination attempts, a President pulling out the race and still deadlocked polling. The lights dimmed in the vast hall of National Exhibition Centre in Birmingham. The walls had been decked with giant Union Flags and a crowd of thousands was waiting to see their political hero. Over the last 24 hours I have received a huge number of lovely and heartfelt messages from people who have expressed their dismay at my resignation, urging me to reconsider.
