Even Democrats in Nevada’s state legislature–a key battleground state–now favor voter ID, but with a catch. The catch was the bill also expands ballot drop boxes, typically favored by Democrats, which Republicans view with skepticism. The bill passed the Senate Monday with a 16-5 vote, and now heads to Republican Gov. Joe Lombardo, who has expressed support in the past for voter ID, the Las Vegas Review-Journal reported. Lombardo vetoed a bill earlier in the session that expanded ballot drop boxes.

The FBI announced that the Chinese national charged with illegally voting in Michigan last year fled the country, and reportedly with a different passport than the one he was ordered to surrender to authorities. The FBI’s criminal complaint says former University of Michigan student Haoxiang Gao used his student ID to register to vote and did in-person early voting, CBS News Detroit reported on Sunday. School officials reportedly asked the student if he illegally voted.

California officials are taking another shot at undoing a voter-approved measure in the city of Huntington Beach that requires ID to vote. California Secretary of State Shirley Weber and Attorney General Rob Bonta filed an appeal in the California 4th District Court of Appeals after an Orange County Superior Court backed Huntington Beach’s authority to require voter ID. Local governments enacting their own election laws in California isn’t unheard of.

Democrat Sens. Ron Wyden and Jeff Merkley want the entire United States to adopt the “Oregon Way” for mail-in voting and have 11 other senators backing them. The Vote at Home Act would provide prepaid envelopes to return ballots for every registered voter, and requires automatic voter registration in states. “I’m not sure you want to follow Oregon about anything,” J. Christian Adams, president of the Public Interest Legal Foundation, told The Daily Signal.
