A new report published by Carers Scotland lays bare the financial impact of caring and paints a bleak picture for Scotland’s 800,000 unpaid carers. Even more concerningly, the number of unpaid carers on Carer’s Allowance cutting back on essentials continues to grow, more than doubling since 2021. Today, 44% of these carers are cutting back on food and heating versus 22% just two years ago. This has led to one in six (16%) carers on benefits being forced to visit food banks.

With an estimated one in ten people eating gluten-free in the UK, there is certainly a demand for more ‘free from’ foods – and cake is no exception. One of the most recent additions to Shetland’s ever-increasing variety of honesty boxes is run by 13-year-old Imogen Johnson. “I got diagnosed with coeliac disease in 2019,” she told Shetland News.

NHS SHETLAND is now advertising for a full-time district nurse in Fair Isle. The post is to replace the current nurse, who is set to leave in September. The salary will range from £37,831 to £46,100, and there is also the opportunity to receive distant island allowance and relocation assistance. There will be a two-bedroom property available on the island for the new nurse to rent. Applications are open now and close on 3 September.
