A wave of deadly strikes in northern Gaza has marked a significant escalation in Israel's offensive. The Israeli military (IDF) says it has struck "over 150 terror targets" across the Gaza Strip in the past 24 hours - an average of one airstrike every ten minutes. At least 109 people have been killed in the strikes, according to the Hamas-run health ministry, bringing the total number killed this week to 284. That number may rise further.

Israel has escalated its attacks in Gaza in the last two days, striking two of the territory's largest remaining hospitals. CCTV footage, verified by Sky News, shows the moment of the attack on the European Hospital near Khan Younis on Tuesday 13 May. Another video, taken from outside the grounds of the hospital, shows plumes of smoke rising from the compound. At least 16 people were killed, according to Gaza's health ministry, which is part of the territory's Hamas-led government.

Almost all flights due to arrive at and depart from London Heathrow were cancelled in the early hours of Friday morning, sending worldwide air transport into chaos. The airport's announcement came after a fire broke out at an electrical substation in Hayes, about 1.5 miles north of the airport, shutting off power to the surrounding area. By 7.45am, a time that usually sees about 200 planes bound for the airport on a typical Friday, the airspace above Heathrow had fallen silent.
