1 INTRODUCTION Contact zones between divergent forms of the same species provide an excellent opportunity to study how isolating barriers are formed and disintegrated during the process of speciation. Contact zones are typically found in areas of ecological transition, where an environmental gradient exists between habitats, leading to overlap between divergent populations that are adapted to different environments (Abbott, 2017; Johannesson et al., 2020; Keller & Seehausen, 2012).
