DD Mau Chinatown is turning seven, and this weekend they’re marking the milestone with an anniversary party. It’s been a journey. Siblings Kim and Kon Tran first launched DD Mau as a tiny bánh mì shop in Yaletown, which quickly gained traction for its bold flavours and casual energy. That success led to the opening of a second, more ambitious location in Chinatown, tucked under Fortune Sound Club at 145 East Pender Street.

Last summer, Tara Davies got the call: The building she was running her business out of was coming down. That meant curtains for Chupito Coctelería, the cocktail-forward Mexican restaurant accessed through a sneaky back alley entry; as well as for Cantina 189, the sibling bar out front. Basically a one-two gut punch. For three years, Davies had poured everything into Chupito — and she’d had to fight for it.

After two decades spent in Michelin-starred kitchens across the UK, Australia, and the Middle East, and fresh off a long run at Canoe in Toronto, Chef Ron McKinlay (yes, that McKinlay) is finally back on home turf.

Spring is finally showing up! Things are growing. Shoots are sprouting. And Chef Tomoko Tahara (of Mæst food) is marking that sweet spot between early spring and full bloom for a one-night-only pop-up dinner, at Modus Coffee in Mount Pleasant on Sunday, April 27th. The night’s theme, “After the Rain”, nods to Kokū, the sixth micro-season in Japan’s 24-part sekki calendar – a time when the rain starts to soak the fields and things begin to stretch, swell, and turn green.

Vagabond, a pop-up built around travelling, collaboration, and local terroir, is rolling through town next week, taking over Nero Tondo space from Tuesday, April 15th until Saturday, April 19th. Vagabond Chefs Christine Sandford and Roger Letourneau bring years of experience from kitchens across Europe and Canada.

Around this time last year, I started needing a shift. I’d been spending too much time behind a screen and needed something real to throw myself into—something that involved physical labour, weather, dirt… and food, of course. By May, I was working Saturdays with Glorious Organics at the Trout Lake Farmers Market. Easily the best call I made all year (thanks for taking me on, guys!).

Nomo Nomo, a 26-seat Japanese izakaya-style bar, is set to open its doors at 1268 Commercial Drive (right next to Magari by Oca) later this summer. The new project comes from industry veterans Benedict Lim (Director of Operations/Co-owner and partner at the Lunch Lady) and Wayne Chow (Beverage Director/Co-owner), with Chef Heedong Choi (previously of Ubuntu) heading the kitchen.
