CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (WVIR) - According to one UVA Health dermatologist, not all sunscreens are made the same. If you’re not careful with the type you pick, you aren’t protected. “Skin cancer is the most common cancer in the United States by far,” UVA Health Dermatologist Doctor Mark Russell said. “There’s probably twice as many skin cancers diagnosed every year as all other cancers.” Dr. Russell, who specializes skin cancers, says knowing your sunscreen type matters.

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (WVIR) - The Jefferson Madison Regional Library kicked off the 2025 summer reading challenge with a celebration. The theme—color our world—invites people of all ages to read, track progress, and compete for grand prizes. The challenge rewards readers for registering, logging 300 reading minutes, and 600 reading minutes. The children’s services manager says they surpassed registration last year. “Reading is so important for everybody,” Children Services Manager Megan Smead said.

On July 26, the Chihamba African American Cultural Arts Festival will return. Both events support the African American Heritage Scholarship. The co-chair of Chihamba says this is a time for all to get together and celebrate.
